Voice Command Running Jacket Prototype – Arduino Mixed With Voice Commands and Scrolling LED Matrix

Here is a fun project that I have been working on over the past month.

I have blogged about wearable technology a few times now, and I am happy to say that this Prototype is coming along nicely and would work very comfortably with a NIKE+ FUEL BAND.

The basic idea is that a runner could wear this “smart jacket” and it could be trained to respond to simple voice commands.  The runner could say “RIGHT” or “LEFT” or “EAT MY DUST”, and the jacket’s on board LED Matrix displays would act accordingly.

A possible design flaw, you could be the act of building this into a jacket vs building the apparatus that could be attached to any jacket… but for now… lets just say it is a jacket…

The over all parts list for building this prototype are fairly in expensive and could probably be achieved for under $100.  if you wanted a super cool Nike running jacket it could add to the cost 🙂

The Arduino compliant voice command shield is here.

Athletic Jersey Powered With Arduino LilyPad Can Detect Jumping – Lights Up LED

2014 is going to be a really good year for technology based wearable clothing.  Take for instance  CUTECIRCUIT. This company has been building LED clothing now for awhile and is just now starting to become mainstream enough that Mercedes has picked up on it.

CHECK OUT THESE VIDEOS: these are amazing

Wearable clothing technology has been out in the wild for some time but it has been encased in the avante garde and tech communities which have a higher adoption rate of technology.

In 2013 the “wearable” concept was really put in motion by wrist bands like NikeFuel Band, Jawbone, and FitBits.  If you look at the group of people that these wrist wearables were targeting there is a marketing secret, in that “Athletes” bridge the divide.  They are not completely avante garde but have passions for style, and they are not completely techy but they see a need for technology because it helps them compete.

Ok so without jumping into a Marketing Theory rabbit hole, as this is a short blog post, “Wearable clothing technology” is going to be hot… as it is the next evolution of the wrist wearable wave.

So I started thinking of places where we would see this outcropping of wearable technology and I came up with a really neat idea for a Basketball Jersey built on the Arduino LilyPad technology.  Again nothing new as you would have seen in the CUTECIRCUIT link above ( I completely admire them by the way ) but I think unlike the CUTE CIRCUIT folks my idea for a basketball jersey has a more “mainstream” approach as the idea could expand into many different sports.

The basic idea would be to create a jersey that contained an accelerometer connected to an Arduino LilyPad.  Which could detect specifically “jumping” at which point the Arduino would turn on LEDs contained in the jersey.  If you think about it for a second the very idea of a player jumping to slam dunk a basketball or catch a football and to have their jersey light up with a pair of LED wings would be fantastic.

Digital Publication/Magazine – Banner Ad With Choose Your Own Adventure

With the recent news about Adobe DPS folio platform becoming free, and the fact that this holiday season the only advertisements we saw on TV were for tablets of every size, shape, Os, and color it is no wonder that Digital Magazines are going to become a hit in 2014-15.  The animation capabilities of Adobe Edge have really take HTML5 UI and interaction to a whole new level.  Not to mention that you can embed Edge projects into folio files.

HERE ARE SOME REALLY GOOD LINKS FOR LEARNING MORE ABOUT DIGITAL PUBLICATIONS AND PLATFORMS:

With all the hype I wanted to build a Banner that had some really interesting features, like “Choose Your Own Adventure”.  The idea isn’t new… meaning that people have built interactive choose your own adventures before, but where I think this idea stands out is that it would be in a magazine type layout.  So if you could imagine being on page 5 and seeing an ad in which you are interacting with something like a chair.  You then continue on reading the magazine and you land on page 20, where the ad has built upon your experience from page five but now it shows the chair being sat on by someone…. Again nothing new designer have done thing like this before in Print and on the web… but again it is the context of a digital magazine.

Swiss Army Knife With Detachable GPS Key Fob

I was using the bottle opener on my Swiss Army Knife the other day during a conversation about GPS Key Fobs… well like all good ideas ( they happen in the middle of good conversation )
First let’s back track and talk about Swiss Army Knives… I happen to be a really big fan of them because they embody everything about my dad and grandfather that can be bottled up into an object.  My dad was an electrical engineer and an inventor, my grandfather was a machinist and wood worker… if you condense those ideas into a pocket object -poof- you have the legacy and essence of a little red pocket knife…
Technology in this day and age is becoming almost as Science Fiction as you can get, the tools and ability of the general public is edging into the realm of Batman’s Utility belt.
A piece of technology that I have always wanted was the cool quick toss magnetic tracking device, an idea used in comics as old as Dick Tracy.  The gadget essentially upon throwing it magnetizes to the surface of an object ( if metal ) and can be used to track anything ( which is essentially how Batman always finds the super villains hideout )
In the practical world you could use the technology for loads of things like: you’re going camping with your dog… you don’t want to keep him on a leash but you want him to be able to run free… You’re with your kids, you want to let them go play in the woods etc. There are tons of spur of the moment situations where this handy little gadget’s functionality could be used.

Interaction With Jungian Archetypes – The Personification of Digital Avatars In Video Games

During the past few months I have been reading Carl Gustav Jung’s – The Red Book.  It is a very cerebral read, one created by digging deep into the mind and exploring our relationships with the world around us.  Jung explores how we deal with ideas and concepts that are very unique to the human condition, concepts that we all share but visualize slightly different.  For example we all have a Shadowy figure that represents the parts of our being that we don’t like and wish to unassociate with. Another example is the concept of Mother and Father, even though on an individual level these figures may vary we all have as humans a core set of Archetypal placeholders.

Jung also brings forth the idea that our Ego is how we visualize ourselves to the outside world and the true Self is this sort of an Archetype as well, but it is one that pertains to us, which we regularly add to and subtract from.  The Ego’s health is based on the projection ( at least this is the way I interpret Jung’s writing) of the Self and how it interacts with the unconscious mind…

Someone who is able to adventure forth through Self on a cerebral/dream like/ altered state or unconscious level interacts with a myriad of Archetypes which represent Myths, Hard to grasp Ideas, Original Thought, Problems, Etc.

I found this idea fascinating and have been thinking about it a lot.

What I find incredible about the idea of Ego projecting Self tackling big problems is it sort personifies the the very nature of Video Games?  Think about it…

1 ) “Ego” wants a sense of adventure – which could represent the initial thought or spark of unconscious dream.

2 ) You find a game that you identify with – which corresponds to the way your perception of the world could work on an unconscious level.

3 ) You pick a character that is suppose to represent you, in the digital world – this again closely resembles this concept of Jungian “Self”

4 ) you visually throw that character into hard to describe problems and situations, that may represent a host of issues in real life, some very well may test your very core or nature in dealing with things like ( Morality, Faith, Justice, Etc. )

5 ) You attempt to beat the game, and or pass the level, solve the problem – this is “Self” interacting and learning from the encounter.

6 ) When you do, or shut the game off… you return to the world/reality and you for the most part… you are different…

New Technology – Coupled with Mobile App Development – Tony Stark IRON MAN – style

I was reading a Great GitHub post the other day for using the LeapMotion API.  I was immediately blown away by possibilities and future versions of current Mobile Apps I’m building or have built.

With a few modifications one can incorporate hands free navigation.  With a few gadgets like the 3M mobile projector, you have a very futuristic Tony Stark IRON MAN moments.

Think about mobile presentation apps, or apps that go out into a field for agriculture in which the person might not want to touch the screen because their hands are dirty or they have gloves on?

The great part is all of this is possible because the API for using this tech is actually downloadable and usable:

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

When you look at the technology above all of it is currently out in the market place.  The items like the Glass Holographic display plate are pretty expensive, but the 3D glasses are not, so one could imagine substituting the Holographic glass technology with 3D glasses and a 3D TV.

I think the thing that strikes me most about these ideas are they are what Sci-Fi movies have expressed for decades but we have been unable to build, and if we could build them they were by large corporations throwing millions of dollars at the project.

With the links I have posted above, and a skillful Dev team you could build these projects in house for your clients on a case by case basis OR build them in a modular fashion and have for example that iPad app you built last year reconfigured to work with gesture based navigation or large format mobile projection.

Possible Sneak Peek of iPhone6 and iWatch/pedometer/key fob

With all the hype surrounding the Apple iPhone 6 and the fabled iWatch/Pedometer that’s coming out I thought I would give my own two cents and a little Marketing Prediction into the mix.

THE BIG TICKET ITEMS HAPPENING IN THE MARKET PLACE:

+ Digital Health Records in the medical industry

+ NikeFuel Band Pedometer Hype

+ Key Fob GPS tracking

+ Hot Fashion with ME bracelets

+ NFC

If you combine all of that into possible things that Apple has to work with the current trending device and wrist band would look like what I am sketching up…  I have not seen anything like this yet so hopefully this makes a splash.
